People who visit Ossabaw Island must provide their own boat transportation unless attending a day trip sponsored by The Ossabaw Island Foundation. The State of Georgia’s Heritage Preserve designation for Ossabaw Island stipulates that no bridge is ever to be built between the mainland and the island, nor is regularly scheduled ferry service ever to be established.
Bringing Your Own Boat.
Since dock space on the island is limited, those who have their own boat need permission to dock overnight. Permission is contingent on an approved visit and is based on boat size, length of stay and space availability.
Chartering a Boat.
Those who do not have their own boat need to charter one. Several local boat captains provide charter service to Ossabaw Island. Service from various docks and marinas on the mainland is available. Some charter captain’s licenses are limited to 6 passengers. For groups larger than 6, multiple boat “shuttles” are required. Many groups staying at North End arrive in “shifts”, taking advantage of this service.
Larger groups may want to consider chartering a pontoon boat. These boats can transport 20-40 people at a time. They are available for a flat fee and can be cost effective based on group size. These boats are ideal for large Day Tour groups. They also work well for larger camping groups that typically transport a large amount of equipment.
There are two docks on Ossabaw Island; Torrey Landing at the north end of the island and Newell Creek Dock on the southern end. Generally, camping groups use the Newell Creek Dock while Clubhouse groups use Torrey Landing.
While several captains can provide service to Ossabaw Island, we recommend you start with the following. If they are unavailable, they may be able to suggest alternatives.
